The Importance of Online Reputation

It really hit home for me one day -- of all places -- at the post office. The guy in front of me was trying to send off an envelope with his passport and birth certificate to some "agency" (I don't know what kind). The lady behind the desk was skeptical, saying, "This is important stuff. How do you know you can trust them?" The guy looked at her like it was a dumb question, then replied, "Oh, that's not a problem. They were the first result on Google."

Search engines have become more than just a way for us to find things in the online world. They are custodians of reputation and trust in the offline (real) world. A high ranking instantly conveys an important sense of real-world legitimacy to a potential customer; conversely, if you're nowhere to be found for important terms that define you (e.g., "Portland shoulder surgeon" for a shoulder surgeon operating in Portland), then potential customers will see this as a red flag, even if it's completely unfounded -- "but if you're the best shoulder surgeon in Portland, shouldn't Google know to put you in the #1 spot?". Like it or not, Google has basically become an "instant background check" tool.

Even if a patient already has the name and phone number for your clinic, they're likely to check out the website, and in the process, check out the search engine rank. For the prospective patient who may still be on the fence and decides to check out the competition, seeing your practice as the first result for "Portland shoulder surgeon" makes a powerful statement that going anywhere else would be an inferior choice. For the prospective patient who sees 4 other local surgeons, 2 blogs, and a law firm ahead of you, it's not the most reassuring situation.

So yes, we drive traffic to your site and phone calls to your practice, but the benefits go beyond that. Being the first search result is like being a celebrity in your little niche; the Dr. Sanjay Gupta of your specialty and region. More importantly, it commands trust. Patients who trust the doctor are likely to be better patients, are likely to refer their friends, and are more likely to walk in the door in the first place, whether they were initially planning to or not.
